Avent West has a neighborhood playgroup for preschoolers and their caregivers. We typically meet Monday afternoons from 4-5:30 p.m. at the playground at Western Blvd. Presbyterian Church
and on Thursday mornings from 10 - noon at Powell Dr. Park. On bad weather days or special occasions, we may meet at a house or the library instead. Playgroup locations are sent out each week on our listserve. If you have small children, but are unable to attend playgroup, we encourage you to still sign up for the playgroup listserve. The listserve is a great place to share ideas, ask questions, swap items, arrange playdates, child care, field trips, etc. It is also a great way to get to know your neighbors. E-mail Courtney Clark at sdmemclark@yahoo.com to sign up for the listserve.
Swift Drive and Pineview Drive Culvert Replacement Project
As part of the Simmons Branch Watershed Study review process, the City of Raleigh held a public meeting with the affected property owners on Swift Dr. and Pineview Dr. The purpose of the meeting was to present the proposed rerouting of the decaying culvert that runs on the north side of Swift Dr. The proposed solution will replace the existing 8’X 5’culvert with a new 20’X 5’ concrete
box culvert to be located on the south side of Swift Dr. The new culvert will run partially under the road. Additionally, there will be some bank stabilization with gabion baskets (metal baskets filled with stone) to reduce future erosion of the stream banks. During construction, the existing culvert will be left in place until the new culvert is tied into the creek. After the new culvert is in place, the old culvert will be collapsed and filled with soil. The new culvert will require 2’ of additional permanent right of way easement, to be granted to the City of Raleigh. There will be a larger temporary construction easement for work on both sides of Swift Dr. as utilities are rerouted and soil is stockpiled. This work is projected to start in 18 months (Summer 2008) if all approvals from the property owners, the city and state are met. This is just one of several phases that seeks to reduce the flooding of Simmons Branch during a 10 year storm event. The first phase is the raising of the dam and dredging of White Oaks Lake, to be followed by the Swift Dr. culvert and bridge replacement phase. There will be additional phases for the areas that are downstream from this section of the creek. Our city liaison for this project is Veronica High, Stormwater Services Project Engineer. She may be contacted at 919-890-3931.
West Citizens Advisory Council (WCAC)
Did you know, no matter where you live you are a member of a CAC? There are 18 CACs in Raleigh and your home address is what determines which CAC is ‘yours’. CACs are the one volunteer citizen body that reports directly to the City Council on planning, growth, community, safety issues, etc.
The WCAC meets the 4th Tuesday of every month, Powell Drive Park @ 7:00.
Recent discussions at the WCAC include: NCSU's proposed development of the Vet School Property; Recent criminal activity and trends; DIX 306; CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design); PROP; Front Yard Parking; We Are Neighbors Program for the Buck Jones Road Area, and more. Every resident member is a voting member. The WCAC voted to support the Vet School Rezoning - Biomedical Centennial Campus. This vote will be reported to the Council and Planning Commission and CAC representatives will follow the public process to ensure the CAC vote is understood and hopefully supported. Also, the WCAC voted to support the DIX 306 plan at our March meeting.
Interested in coming? Come on! You don't need to register to attend, you don't need to volunteer, you don't have to speak, you can request topics of discussion, you can talk with the RPD, you can vote on CAC related topics, you can learn, and you can be informed! If you attend, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at what you learn, what you share with others around SW Raleigh, and all you did not realize existed.
To receive an agenda, contact Sheila at Sheila.Lynch@ci.raleigh.nc.us. See you next month! Elizabeth Byrd, WCAC Chair
Free Bulky Load Pick Up
Free collection for bulky items that do not fit into the garbage carts is available. Bulky items are items such as household furnishings, household appliances, mattresses, box springs, lawn equipment, and similar household items too large to be placed in the rollout garbage cart. A bulky item collection load at a single address is limited to four (4) cubic yards (about a pickup load size). To maintain the efficiency of our crews, please accumulate several items prior to scheduling this special collection. Note: If you schedule a free bulky load collection and it is deemed to be in excess of 4 cubic yards you may be assessed the fee of $50 for a Special Load Collection. Excess bags of garbage that would normally be put in the garbage cart will not be collected. No odor-causing waste will be collected. Large appliances can not be collected (see Special Load Pick Up For A Fee). You must call ahead to schedule a bulky item collection. You can schedule collection by calling Solid Waste Services customer service at 831-6890. Items placed at curbside without scheduling ahead for a bulky item collection will not be picked up by regular garbage, recycling or yard waste collection crews, and may incur a $50 citation for violation of the Solid Waste Code. http://www.raleighnc.gov/
